MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Assembly is taking up a bill that would increase election recount fees.

Currently candidates in races with more than 1,000 votes can request a free recount if the margin between them is less than half-a-percent of the votes cast. If the margin is more than half-a-percent but less than 2 percent the requestor must pay $5 per ward. If the margin is more than 2 percent the requestor must pay the full cost.

The Republican bill would reduce the vote-margin threshold for free recounts to a quarter of a percent, raise per ward fees to $25 and require requestors to bear the full cost if the margin is 1 percent or greater.

The Assembly is expected to vote on the measure Tuesday.
