BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) - Aston Villa has boosted its striker options for the scrap for Premier League survival by signing Grant Holt on loan from second-tier Wigan, reuniting the burly forward with his former manager Paul Lambert.
The 32-year-old Holt played under Lambert at Norwich, where he scored 53 goals in 92 games.
Holt’s move to Villa until the end of the season may revive a career that has been on the slide since joining Wigan last summer, with his last goal coming in August.
Lambert says Tuesday “coming back into the Premier League will rekindle that desire in him to succeed again at this level.”
Villa is in 11th place in the league but just five points off the relegation zone after Monday’s 2-1 loss to Arsenal.
