JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A $5 million renovation of Thalia Mara Hall began Monday with the ripping out of old seats and unveiling of the new: roomier gold seats fundraisers bank on turning up more gold for the project.

The new house seats are part of the renovation funded by the nonprofit Friends of Thalia Mara Hall.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (https://on.thec-l.com/1eBuw8X ) the new chairs with Crypton Super fabric and modern LED aisle lighting are this century’s version of the 45-year-old hall’s original seats.

The hall’s renovation is funded by $1 million in state bonds for accessibility upgrades, $2.8 million from the city of Jackson for a new air conditioning system, lighting upgrades and fire safety equipment and, at present, close to $1.3 million in pledges and donations from Friends of Thalia Mara Hall.
