MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Tuesday, the opening day of the 2014 session:
HOUSE:
-Met briefly to handle routine opening day business.
-Joined with the Senate for the governor’s State of the State address.
SENATE:
-Saw Sen. Robert Bedford, a big Alabama, fan put on an orange cap shaped like an eagle because he lost a bet on the Iron Bowl with Sen. Del Marsh, a big Auburn fan.
-Took longer than usual to handle routine opening day business because Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, slowed down action to protest a proposal to make changes in the water system in Jefferson County.
AGENDA:
-Senate Education Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 727 of the Statehouse to consider a bill saying the state Department of Education does not regulate private schools.
-House Constitution, Campaign and Elections Committee meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday in room 123 to consider a bill designed to make sure absentee ballots get to Alabama military serving overseas.
-House Ways and Means-Education Committee meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday in room 617 to consider legislation providing a tax credit to encourage adoptions of foster children.
-House State Government Committee meets at 3 p.m. Wednesday in room 428 to consider tax-related bills pushed by the House Republican Caucus.
-Senate Constitution and Elections Committee meets at noon Wednesday in room 320 to consider a bill restricting former legislators from lobbying Legislature for two years after leaving office.
-House meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday and Senate at 4 p.m.
