SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - Sparks City Manager Shaun Carey has announced his retirement effective April 4 after 13 years on the job.

Carey’s two-year contract was set to expire in July 2015.

City spokesman Adam Mayberry said in a statement Monday that the city council will begin an effort to select an acting city manager. He did not immediately provide a specific reason for Carey’s retirement.

The 1975 Sparks High School graduate was named the city’s public works director in 1992. He became assistant city manager in 1999 and was promoted to city manager in 2000.

Mayor Geno Martini says he cannot say enough about the professionalism, dedication and commitment to the city Carey exhibited during more than two decades of public service.
