TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The president of New Jersey’s largest and most powerful teachers union says he wants input into Gov. Chris Christie’s proposal to extend the length of the school day and school year.
The concept of having children spend more time in school is included in an excerpt of Christie’s State of the State speech obtained by The Associated Press.
Christie is scheduled to give the address Tuesday afternoon and is expected to leave details of his proposal to state education officials.
New Jersey Education Association President Wendell Steinhauer says in a statement that he welcomes the chance to sit down with Christie to discuss the benefits and challenges of the idea.
Steinhauer also says that Christie should renounce his veto on Monday of a bill to study implementing full-day kindergarten statewide.
