NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A man sentenced as a teenager to six life terms for armed robbery has had his prison term slashed to 40 years.
Travion Blount had asked then-Gov. Bob McDonnell for relief last month. The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/1gB9zwh ) that McDonnell commuted the sentence as one of his final acts in office.
The 23-year-old Blount was 15 when he and two 18-year-olds robbed a house party in Norfolk. No shots were fired, and Blount injured no one. The older teens pleaded guilty and received 10- and 13-year sentences. Blount went to trial and was sentenced to six life terms plus 118 years.
John Coggeshall is Blount’s attorney. He says Blount now knows he won’t die in prison.
Blount’s mother, Angela Blount, says 40 years is still ridiculous.
