Security heads say Target Corp and Neiman Marcus aren’t the only retailers in the United States to be hit by massive data breaches that potentially compromised millions of shoppers’ personal data.
Reuters reported that smaller breaches have hit at least three other retail stores — but they’re not saying which ones. The media outlet reported that unnamed sources familiar with the Target data hacking investigation said three other retailers that are common presences in malls around the nation were also hit. The details of these breaches haven’t yet come to light in order to keep the investigation from being compromised.
But security officials say the culprits may be the same as those who hit Target, Reuters reported.
The investigators say the data hacks may have occurred last year.
So far, law enforcement officials think the leaders of the data breaches may have hailed from Eastern Europe, Reuters reported.
Only one retailer, Neiman Marcus, has announced it was the target of a cyber attack since Target did on Dec. 19. On Friday, Target announced that up to 110 million shoppers may have been victimized.
