LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says he’s heartened by foundations’ financial commitment to Detroit’s pensions to avoid the sale of city-owned art but isn’t saying whether the state might contribute money, too.
Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel on Monday called the philanthropic community’s announcement “positive news.” She declines to rule in or out the possibility of asking lawmakers for a financial commitment.
Wurfel says any significant participation from Michigan “would be in partnership with the Legislature” and it’d be inappropriate and premature to comment further due to the mediation process’ confidentiality.
Snyder has said that Detroit shouldn’t expect state money to help with bankruptcy.
A mediator has asked foundations and others to raise $500 million to protect pieces in the Detroit Institute of Arts while assisting pensioners expected to lose some benefits.
