NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The Navy has resumed its search and recovery operations for a helicopter that crashed off the coast of Virginia.
The helicopter crashed in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday about 18 miles east of Virginia Beach. The helicopter had a crew of five. Two survived the crash and two died, while the pilot remains missing at sea.
The Coast Guard stopped actively searching for the pilot on Thursday. On Friday night, the Navy suspended its diving and recovery operations due to poor weather.
The Navy says it was able to resume those activities on Sunday.
The crew members were assigned to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14. They were flying an MH-53E “Sea Dragon” on a mine countermeasure training exercise when the crash happened.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
