MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - A funeral service is set Tuesday for a Virginia State Police trooper who died while on duty.

State police say the service for Sgt. J. Michael Phillippi is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at McCabe Memorial Baptist Church in Martinsville. It will be followed by a reception and lunch in his memory.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says a rescue crew on Saturday found the 65-year-old Phillippi still seated inside a car that had crashed into a road sign, crossed Route 57 and hit an embankment. She says a medical examiner determined the cause of death was a medical condition, not injuries from the crash. Privacy laws prevented disclosure of the specific condition.

Phillippi was working an overnight supervisory shift. He was taken to Martinsville Memorial Hospital, where he died.
