HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Secretary of the State Denise Merrill says absentee ballot voting by military members stationed overseas improved dramatically in Connecticut between 2010 and 2012.

Merrill says 94 percent of absentee ballots requested by men and women serving overseas were returned in time to be counted during the 2012 presidential election. She says that’s a 30 percent improvement over the 2010 state and federal election.

Merrill noted the improvement in a report to the legislature released Monday. The report was required under a state law aimed at improving absentee voting by military members.

Merrill says delays in the military postal service have caused overseas ballots to arrive late and not be counted in elections. She says a federal law allowing military members to submit ballots electronically has helped with the problem.
