2 SHOT AT FLORIDA MOVIE THEATER, 1 LATER DIES
Authorities say a retired Tampa police officer has been charged with fatally shooting a man during an argument over cellphone use at a Florida theater. A Pasco County Sheriff’s spokeswoman says the shooting occurred Monday after 71-year-old Curtis Reeves asked 43-year-old Chad Oulson to stop texting during the previews of “Lone Survivor” at a Tampa Bay area multiplex. Reeves is charged with second-degree murder.
GOV. RICK SCOTT: BOOST SPENDING TO PREVENT CHILD ABUSE
Florida Gov. Rick Scott wants the state to spend millions to bolster its efforts to prevent child abuse. Scott will announce Tuesday that he wants to hire additional child protection investigators. The governor will also push for extra funding to allow for two-person teams to handle cases involving children the most at risk of abuse.
A GROUP OF STUDENTS FROM CUBA IS TAKING CLASSES AT MIAMI DADE COLLEGE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES
The college announced Monday that the students have arrived in Miami and will spend the semester taking courses in sociology, computing, psychology, business and English. The students will obtain a certificate of completion once they finish the courses. U.S. citizens can travel and take classes in Cuba, but Cuban students rarely, if ever, travel to the U.S. for similar coursework.
BODIES OF WOMAN, TWO TEENAGERS FOUND IN SOUTH FLORIDA HOME
West Palm Beach Sgt. Dave Lefont says the woman said she was going to “do harm” to herself or other family members in an email sent Monday morning to her ex-husband and other relatives. The ex-husband called police as he approached the woman’s West Palm Beach home. Lefont says there was no forced entry. Investigators are interviewing the woman’s ex-husband, but he is not considered a suspect.
FORMER TENNIS STAR JENNIFER CAPRIATI WON’T FACE BATTERY AND STALKING CHARGES
The charges stem from a 2013 confrontation with an ex-boyfriend. A spokesman for the Palm Beach County state attorney’s office said Monday that Capriati completed 30 hours of community service at a Tampa hospital and four hours of anger management counseling under a deferred prosecution agreement. The case was dropped Monday morning. Capriati had been accused of punching former boyfriend Ivan Brannan at a gym last Valentine’s Day and of stalking him for months before that.
