The Red Hot Chili Peppers will be joining Bruno Mars at next month’s Super Bowl halftime show, the National Football League has confirmed.
The news was announced Saturday during Fox’s coverage of an NFC divisional playoff game.
“Bruno Mars first announced his Super Bowl Halftime performance during an unprecedented live announcement on ’Fox NFL Sunday’ in New York City’s Times Square just before kickoff of the first Sunday of the 2013 season,” the NFL said in a press release.
Billboard’s 2013 Artist of the Year and Grammy winner Bruno Mars has sold over 130 million singles worldwide, the release said.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, and won six Grammy Awards. The band — which includes singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer — was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
“The Pepsi Super Bowl halftime show is the most-watched musical event of the year. More than 110.5 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year’s show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide,” the NFL said.
Previous halftime performances include Beyoncé, Madonna, the Black Eyed Peas, The Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Prince, and the Rolling Stones.
