LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Permits to cut firewood in Michigan’s forests are going on sale earlier than usual because of the bitterly cold winter.
The Department of Natural Resources generally begins offering the permits April 1. Instead, they’re available now for $20 each. They entitle the buyer to collect up to five standard cords of wood per household on designated forest land in the northern two-thirds of the state.
The wood is for personal use and cannot be resold or traded. The permits are good for 90 days.
People enrolled in the Low Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program can quality for reimbursement of the fee.
Fuel wood permits can be obtained at DNR field offices and operations service centers. They have information on loggers who might have wood available for sale or collection.
