AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa says he will resign as leader of the 15-campus system and return full-time to his medical practice as a surgeon.
Cigarroa told staff of his decision in a Sunday night email obtained by The Associated Press. Cigarroa says he will be the head of pediatric transplant surgery at the system’s Health Science Center in San Antonio.
A Monday news conference has been scheduled for the announcement with Cigarroa and Board of Regents Chairman Paul Foster. Cigarroa, the first Hispanic to lead the University of Texas System, says he’ll stay on the job until his replacement is hired.
Cigarroa’s tenure has included establishing a new university in South Texas with a medical school, and a new medical school at the Austin flagship campus.
