BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts political leaders are reacting to news that Senate President Therese Murray will not seek re-election when her term ends at the end of the year.

Murray is barred by term limits from serving as president beyond March 2015. She was elected senator of the Plymouth and Barnstable District in 1992 and became the first woman to head the chamber in March 2007.

She announced Saturday that she will serve the rest of her term and leave the legislature at the end of the year.

Gov. Deval Patrick said Murray has been a force for good in the Senate.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo wished her the best of luck when she leaves Beacon Hill.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh thanked Murray for her tireless public service and commended her on a remarkable career in the Senate.
