MIAMI (AP) - Charlie Crist is calling for an end to the U.S. embargo on Cuba.

The Democratic gubernatorial candidate appeared on Bill Maher’s HBO show on Friday.

“I don’t think it worked,” Crist said of the 52-year-old embargo. He also agreed when the comedian said politicians need to stand up to the Cuban exile community that supports the economic sanctions.

Gov. Rick Scott called that “insulting” in a statement released Saturday. He added: “Our Cuban community needs to be stood up for.”

Crist was also on the show to promote his new book. The former GOP governor said lifting the embargo could create jobs for Floridians.

U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia, the first Cuban-American Democrat from Florida elected to Congress, has also campaigned in support of loosening restrictions.
