CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A McDowell County woman has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for trying to interfere with an Internal Revenue Service investigation.
Fifty-nine-year-old Bonita Witt-Hird of Thorpe also was ordered to pay $422,000 restitution, which includes taxes that were never filed, interest and penalties.
Witt-Hird was employed by an Elkview sewage treatment company.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says she failed to file required employment tax returns and make deposits for taxes that had been collected from employees’ wages between 2003 and 2009.
Goodwin says Witt-Hird admitted to providing false records to IRS agents in an attempt to obstruct their investigation. She also admitted to diverting the money from the employment taxes to pay other bills owed by her employer.
