COVINGTON, La. (AP) - The elected successor to former St. Tammany Parish Coroner Peter Galvan will begin with an annual salary of $84,000.

The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1fEeV8T ) the parish council set the salary Thursday night amid lingering questions about whether the position is a full- or part-time job.

The council’s decision comes less than a week before the start of candidate qualifying for the special April 5 election to fill the remainder of Galvan’s term, which runs through March 2016.

Galvan had been paid more than $200,000 as a part-time coroner who ran a full-time medical practice in Slidell.

Galvan, who resigned in October and pleaded guilty to a federal corruption charge, is scheduled to be sentenced next week in U.S. District Court in New Orleans.
