Snow extends Columbia schools’ schedule into June

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A full week of ice, snow and extreme cold has pushed a central Missouri school district’s calendar into June.

Columbia public schools were closed Friday for a fifth straight day, meaning the district has had seven closings for bad weather so far this academic year.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1jkUtQb ) district officials have moved the final day of classes to June 5, rather than May 27 as originally scheduled.

Missouri requires public schools to include six inclement-weather days into their calendars. Districts must make up all of those days plus half of any additional days missed, up to a total of 10 makeup days.

Columbia superintendent Chris Belcher says June 6 is probably the latest that school might end, regardless of any additional snow days this winter.
