WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) - An Illinois woman has moved a step closer to a federal judgeship in the Southern District of Illinois.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin on Thursday announced the Senate Judiciary Committee approved of Nancy Rosenstengel.

Rosenstengel’s nomination to the U.S. District Court in southern Illinois now moves to the Senate for approval.

Durbin says Rosenstengel’s confirmation would be historic. He says she’d be the first woman to serve as a federal judge in the Southern District of Illinois.

Rosenstengel, who is from Belleville, has served in that district for about 15 years. She’s currently the clerk of the court, a post she’s held since 2009. Before that, she served as a law clerk in the district.

She’s also worked five years at a private St. Louis law firm.
