SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A state House committee has set aside a bill to reduce workers’ compensation benefits for employees who are drunk when they’re injured on the job.

The Santa Fe New Mexican (https://bit.ly/1fDdaJ6 ) reports that the House Labor and Human Resources Committee voted 4-3 along party lines Thursday to table the bill supported by Republicans.

Democratic House Speaker Kenny Martinez of Grants said the bill would unfairly penalize families for breadwinners’ irresponsible actions.

Republican Rep. Dennis Roch of Logan argued an employer shouldn’t be on the hook for an employee’s poor decision.

Business groups support the bill, which is opposed by trade unions.
