RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A pair of North Carolina Congressmen has offered an alternative schedule they want Gov. Pat McCrory to use to fill the empty 12th District seat weeks earlier than he decided.
U.S. Reps. G.K. Butterfield and David Price wrote McCrory urging him to move up the special election to determine Mel Watt’s successor from Nov. 4 to Sept. 16.
McCrory announced the special election to fill Watt’s current two-year term will use the same election dates as the regularly scheduled election for the term beginning in January 2015. He cited simplicity, overseas voting rules and the expense of a separate election.
Price and Butterfield told McCrory on Thursday their proposal complies with voting rules and 12th District voters should not be without a representative for 10 months.
Candidate filing begins Monday.
