It’s like a Third World country around here — that was Vice President Joseph R. Biden’s assessment of LaGuardia Airport in New York, as he compared it other hot travel spots around the world.
Specifically, the gaffe-prone vice president said that if somebody put a blindfold on him and walked him through LaGuardia, he would think he was in “some Third World country,” The Associated Press reported.
What the famed New York port should shoot for is Hong Kong, he suggested. Ports there have the modern facilities that most people would think belong in America, he said, AP reported.
He made the statements as part of general thoughts on the need for infrastructure improvements in the country, shared Thursday at a Philadelphia event. Mr. Biden started with Amtrak, which had just showcased a new electric locomotive, but then moved to speaking about ports and airports, and their need for comprehensive upgrades.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates LaGuardia, reported that it is investing $3.6 billion to “provide passengers with a world-class terminal,” AP reported.
