PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County will negotiate a contract with Jackson-based Health Assurance to provide health care services at the local jail.
Board of Supervisors President Troy Ross says the move is meant to reduce liability for the county, bring more health services in-house and eventually save some money.
The Mississippi Press reports (https://bit.ly/1iy7L8Z ) that the board of supervisors selected Health Assurance after hearing from it and Birmingham-based Quality Correctional Health Care.
Currently, the county provides some in-house care by county-employed health care professionals. Inmates must go off site for dental appointments and any mental health needs.
Health Assurance would provide primary care, mental health and eventually dental services in-house and 24-hour, on-call service at a proposed cost of $845,000 annually. It would also include health care for juveniles.
