WASHINGTON (AP) - A former middle school building in Washington is going to be transformed into a new district headquarters for D.C. police.

Mayor Vincent Gray and Police Chief Cathy Lanier will announce the beginning of the construction project on Friday.

The vacant Merritt Middle School will be gutted and turned into an office building, including a gymnasium and community room.

In addition to the police department’s 6th District headquarters, it will also house the department’s youth investigations division.
