NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) - State police are trying to determine why a van crashed into a state Department of Transportation truck in an accident that seriously injured three people on Interstate 95 in North Stonington.

Troopers say DOT crews were patching potholes in the southbound lanes Thursday afternoon when a van driven by 63-year-old Glen Kelley of Wisconsin sped into the work zone and hit one of several trucks that were lined up as crews fixed potholes in the center lane. Another vehicle then hit the van.

The southbound side of the highway was closed for nearly four hours because of the crash, which seriously injured Kelley and two passengers in the van - 53-year-old Evette Arias and 37-year-old Lydia Diaz, both of Pawtucket, R.I. Their conditions weren’t released.

No DOT workers were injured.
