LOS ANGELES (AP) - A former Los Angeles Valley College student was arrested Thursday after authorities say she threatened to shoot up the campus.
About 700 people were evacuated after deputies assigned to the San Fernando Valley campus received a phone call at about 9 a.m. from someone who reported overhearing the threat, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Capt. Mike Parker said.
Daytime classes were canceled as deputies searched the campus. A nearby high school was also locked down briefly.
About 90 minutes after the call, investigators arrested a 21-year-old woman at an apartment in the Panorama City area, Parker said. Her name was not immediately released but she attended classes in the fall, Parker said.
“She’s not in the (current) interim session and it’s not known if she was going to attend the next session,” he said.
There was no immediate word on what prompted the threat but investigators were talking to the woman, Parker said.
The school said evening classes for final examinations would be held as scheduled.
Two people were arrested last month in a Valley College parking lot after a nighttime shooting that detectives called “random” and not school-related.
The college of about 20,000 students is 15 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
