SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Trial has been set for April 21 in Spokane for a substitute teacher accused of roughing up four sixth-grade students and locking them in a classroom at Trent elementary school in the East Valley School District.

Matthew C. Deryan pleaded not guilty last week to assault and unlawful imprisonment charges.

The Spokesman-Review reports (https://bit.ly/1kh526T ) students also said Deryan smelled of alcohol, swore at them and called them names in the Jan. 17 incident.

The 46-year-old denied assaulting students. He was fired and banned from school grounds.
