HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Gov. Steve Bullock has authorized a temporary increase in low-income energy assistance to help Montanans deal with the high price of propane.
Bullock on Thursday announced a one-time, 25 percent increase in benefits for Low-Income Energy Assistance Program households whose primary heating fuel is propane. The increase will average just over $220 per household.
Bullock says the increase will be applied to the households’ customer accounts with their propane vendors by early next week.
Propane cost under $2 per gallon last year, but is over $5 per gallon in some parts of the state due to propane shortages in the Midwest.
About 13 percent of the households in Montana are heated by propane.
Montanans who do not qualify for LIEAP may qualify for heating assistance through Energy Share Montana.
