Rep. Steve King isn’t worried about comedian Bill Maher’s apparent plan to oust a member of Congress in the fall election.

CQ Roll Call reports that Mr. King responded to the news by saying that Mr. Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” should step up and run for public office.

“He’s got a safe seat right now,” the Iowa Republican told the news organization. “Anybody that’d put their name on the ballot is deserving of our respect, so let’s see if I can start to respect Bill Maher.”

“Then all the comedians can make fun of him,” Mr. King said.

The New York Times reported last week that Mr. Maher plans to knock off a Republican to target in the election and will ask viewers to weigh in on which lawmaker to target.

“This year, we are going to be entering into the exciting world of outright meddling with the political process,” Mr. Maher told The Times.

Mr. King has been a frequent target of criticism from Mr. Maher and has made controversial statements in the past that angered both Democrats and Republicans.
