NEW YORK (AP) - It’s time to go home for a painting stolen from Poland during World War II.
U.S. authorities on Thursday officially turned over a painting by German painter Johann Conrad Seekatz to Polish officials.
The painting is called “Saint Philip Baptizing a Servant of Queen Kandaki.”
It had been in the National Museum in Warsaw. Authorities say it was taken by Nazis between 1939 and 1945, when German forces occupied Poland.
In 2008, the Polish government notified the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations division that it was among several works that had been auctioned in New York.
Authorities determined it had been sold to a London gallery, and was under an incorrect name.
An examination in 2012 revealed the painting’s true background, and it was taken into U.S. custody to be returned.
