CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Gov. Maggie Hassan says the state must continue to improve education in science, technology, engineering and math - the so-called STEM subjects - to meet the needs of high-tech companies.

In her State of the State address on Wednesday, Hassan announced the creation of a STEM Education Task Force to make recommendations for updating the curriculum in New Hampshire’s schools.

She says technology companies like Next Step Bionics and Prosthetics in Manchester need a specially trained workforce. Preparing New Hampshire students to fill those jobs, she says, can help keep young people in the state instead of leaving for jobs elsewhere.

She also says the Department of Resources and Economic Development will work to put manufacturing companies together with classes at local schools.
