LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 66-year-old retiree who’s new to Nevada has announced he’ll challenge Congressman Joe Heck as an independent.

Steven St. John announced his bid for the 3rd Congressional District seat on Tuesday. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/N8OmB6 ) St. John has lived in Nevada for more than seven months after leaving California, where he and his wife worked at the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper.

St. John lives in Henderson.

The candidate says he wants to let Nevadans vote on issues that come before Congress. He’s proposing a polling system that would allow constituents to weigh in on bills, and he would vote with the majority based on the feedback.

Democrat Erin Bilbray has also announced her bid for Heck’s seat.
