PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A death certificate says a virus killed a 17-year-old boy at the state-run juvenile corrections program in Custer.
The document says Brady Folkens died Dec. 21 from lymphocytic myocarditis associated with Parvovirus B19.
The Department of Corrections says that’s a common viral rash infection in children for which there’s no treatment.
Folkens developed symptoms at the State Treatment and Rehabilitation Academy and was seen by on-site medical staff before being taken to the Custer Regional Hospital.
He was flown to Sioux Falls so he could be seen by a specialist but died at a hospital, with his family present.
The DOC says a report by the independent juvenile corrections monitor found no evidence of abuse or neglect.
