SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah has given final approval to a $5.35 million settlement with Chevron after a pipeline leaked about 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel in northern Utah last year.
John Whitehead, the deputy director of Utah’s Division of Water Quality Director says the division’s director Walt Baker signed the agreement on Jan. 28.
Whitehead says Utah’s Water Quality Board approved the deal earlier in January.
Chevron says in a statement that it’s committed to meeting its obligations under the settlement and will continue to work with Utah officials.
The agreement includes $4.4 million for mitigation projects beyond efforts to clean up the marsh area near Willard Bay in Box Elder County.
It also includes a $350,000 civil penalty and $550,000 for damages.
Chevron will also be responsible for cleaning up any additional contamination discovered in the future.
