LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan’s 15 public universities would see a 6 percent increase in state funding under Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposal.
The increase proposed Wednesday would give the schools additional state aid for the third straight year after four consecutive years of cuts. Aid to universities currently is down one-third from just seven years ago and was cut significantly by Snyder in his first year in office.
Schools wouldn’t get some funding if they increase tuition more than 3.2 percent.
Michigan’s 28 community colleges are due for a 3 percent funding increase.
Ferris State University President David Eisler calls Snyder’s proposal “very positive” and says it raises higher education as a priority in Michigan.
