CLEVELAND (AP) - Prosecutors in Cleveland say a man who fatally shot a friend who tried to keep him from driving drunk has been sentenced to spend at least 26 years in prison.
The Cuyahoga (Ky-uh-HOH-guh) County prosecutor’s office said 41-year-old Scott Campbell was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole eligibility for at least 26 years.
Campbell pleaded guilty in January to murder and a variety of other charges.
Prosecutors said he killed 43-year-old Java Bowling last Aug. 9 after Bowling tried to take the keys away from a highly intoxicated Campbell. Campbell fatally shot Bowling outside Bowling’s home then fled.
Assistant County Prosecutor Brian Radigan said Bowling “lost his life trying to protect the life of a friend.”
