DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Mayors from Dubuque and Charles City are being recognized at a ceremony in Washington as their communities celebrate winning awards from the Environmental Protection Agency for community projects that protect the environment and encourage economic vitality.

The EPA created the National Award for Smart Growth Achievement in 2002.

Dubuque won for its Historic Millwork District and Washington Neighborhood revitalization project. The area, neglected and largely abandoned, has been restored to vibrancy. Mayor Roy Buol is to be recognized at the Wednesday morning ceremony at EPA headquarters in Washington.

Charles City won for using land acquired through a federal flood buyout program to create the Charles City Riverfront Park. Mayor James Erb will be recognized at Wednesday’s ceremony.

Other winners were projects in Atlanta, Chicago, and Sacramento, Calif.
