GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - The Gulfport Police Department has pink-slipped K-9 Fred.

Police Chief Leonard Papania tells The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/1ipMFJK ) that Fred can sniff out drugs. Fred can patrol.

But, Papania says, Fred gets distracted. In searching a building, Papania says Fred might spy a soda can on the floor and start playing with it.

The Police Department has tried to train this out of him. Fred’s been back to school. It just wasn’t working

So the department is sending the Belgian Malinois back to U.S. K-9 Unlimited in Kaplan, La.

Papania says the city bought Fred two years ago.

On Tuesday, the city council declared Fred to be surplus property, which allows the police department to sell Fred back to K-9 Unlimited.
