HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A candidate for Montana’s U.S. House seat says he was joking when he called former Secretary Hillary Clinton the “anti-Christ” at a recent campaign event.

Former state Sen. Ryan Zinke said Tuesday his comments in Bigfork were “a little bit harsh,” but that nobody should take them seriously.

The Bigfork Eagle reported Zinke made his comments during a Jan. 27 campaign event.

The former Navy SEAL says he was emotional over the death of two former SEALs in the 2012 attacks on a diplomatic outpost Benghazi, Libya.

Four Americans died in the attacks, which Clinton called a “terrible tragedy” that illustrated the challenge of protecting Americans serving in dangerous part of the world.

Zinke says he believes Clinton put politics ahead of U.S. troops’ safety as secretary of state.
