YORK, Pa. (AP) - Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon is merging with WellSpan Health, an integrated health-care system based in York.

Officials said Tuesday that the governing boards for both organizations have approved a memorandum of understanding, which outlines the goals of the potential affiliation.

Next steps include a period of formal due diligence, the development of a final agreement, as well as a federal and state regulatory review period. If all goes well, the merger could be concluded at the end of 2014.

Good Samaritan said last summer it was seeking a “strategic alliance” with another health-care system to help strengthen its financial and health-care resources.

WellSpan Health is a nonprofit with about 11,000 employees, including 700 physicians, 47 outpatient health-care locations, a regional home-care organization and a rehabilitation hospital.
