SEATTLE (AP) - After meeting with federal officials, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray says the city is making progress on police reforms but still has a ways to go.
The Seattle Times reports (https://is.gd/Se1r9c ) that Murray met with the acting head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, Jocelyn Samuels, as well as Seattle U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan. The city entered into a settlement agreement with the DOJ in 2012 to address concerns that officers were too quick to use force, especially in minor situations.
The city has reached some benchmarks related to the settlement, including the adoption of a new use-of-force policy. But Murray says the department still has work to do when it comes to training and improving technology to measure the changes.
Durkan said Tuesday she could not understate the importance of the summit, which was also attended by Merrick Bobb, the court-appointed monitor overseeing police reforms.
