AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage is proposing a plan to provide incentives for companies and allow employees to be exempt from paying union dues or fees in certain areas of the state.
LePage announced the proposal on Tuesday during his State of the State before the Democratic-controlled Legislature.
He says the “Open for Business Zones” will offer discounted electricity rates and employment tax benefits for companies. He also says employees in those areas won’t be forced to join unions, pay labor dues or fees.
LePage, a Republican who has long advocated for the state to adopt a right-to-work law, says the proposal will allow Maine to compete with states that do have those laws.
He says it will help the state attract good paying jobs and investment.
