MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A National Transportation Safety Board report says faulty pieces of equipment used to secure ships to docks led to a Carnival vessel detaching from a dock before hitting two other ships during a windstorm.
The NTSB says the April 3 accident caused about $2.7 million in damage to the Carnival Triumph and $203,000 in damage to two other vessels at the BAE Systems shipyard. A dock worker also drowned when he was thrown into the water.
In a statement Tuesday, BAE Systems officials said they’re sending information to the NTSB that wasn’t available during the fact-finding phase of its investigation to try having the agency reconsider listing faulty bollards as probable cause in the incident.
The Triumph was undergoing repairs in Mobile after being stranded at sea for five days.
