LORDSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - While General Motors’ overall sales fell last month because of nasty winter storms around the country, the Ohio-built Chevrolet Cruze had its best January ever.

GM reported Monday that January sales of the Cruze - assembled in Lordstown, near Youngtown in northeast Ohio - were up 16 percent over the same period last year. The compact car sold 16,828 units, compared with 14,524 last January.

Overall, GM sales were down 12 percent last month. The other two top-selling U.S. companies, Ford and Toyota, also saw their sales drop with the temperatures in January.

The Cruze continued to be GM’s second-best selling vehicle. It trailed only the Chevrolet Silverado pickup, which was named the North American Truck of the Year at last month’s North American International Auto Show.
