A 4-year-old child was pulled from a swimming pool on the Norwegian Cruise Line ship and pronounced dead by drowning seconds later, Coast Guard Petty Officer Adam SanSoucie said.
Another child, 6, pulled from the same pool was airlifted to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, N.C., CBS reported. His condition on Tuesday was still unknown.
The ship was off the coast of North Carolina when the swimming incidents occurred.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family during this extremely difficult time and are providing full assistance and support,” the cruise ship said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. “The family is in our thoughts and prayers, and we ask that you please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as well.”
The gender of the 4-year-old wasn’t released. It’s not clear where the Norwegian ship was sailing.
