ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A 24-year-old mother is accused of enabling abuse that led to her 4-year-old son’s death in Burnsville.
Sha’reese Monique Miller was charged Monday with three counts of second-degree manslaughter, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press (https://bit.ly/1ioNNNM ).
The boy, Key’ontay Miller Peterson, was found dead June 11.
Miller’s boyfriend, William Alphonso Warr, 25, was charged Jan. 21 with first-degree murder.
Prosecutors say she put her son in danger by allowing him to be around Warr, letting the abuse continue and not seeking medical care for injuries that caused his death.
An autopsy showed the boy had chest contusions, multiple bruises, eight broken ribs believed to have been sustained at various times, and a buildup of gas and blood in his abdomen.
He had internal injuries that became infected. If they’d been treated in a timely manner, they may not have become fatal, the charges said.
Warr wasn’t supposed to have contact with Miller or her children because of prior domestic abuse. Miller told police he had become violent with her about 100 times in the time they had been together.
Miller and Warr share a 1-year-old daughter. Miller also had two sons, Peterson and his younger brother.
Warr tried to flee the day of Peterson’s death and was arrested for violating the order of protection.
Warr is serving a 2-year, 2-month prison sentence for violating the order for protection and damaging property in his getaway attempt. His next court date in the murder case is April 29.
Miller is being held in the Dakota County Jail, with bail set at $50,000 with conditions or $100,000 without.
She’s due in court Feb. 24.
