Diehard Seattle Seahawks fan Sgt. Christopher Hogan was in the midst of cheering his team’s win from afar — from his U.S. Army post in Kandahar, Afghanistan — when he was told to pick up the phone: It’s President Obama.
Mr. Obama called in special congratulations, NBC reported.
“He was checking up on us, thanking us for what we’ve done,” he said, of the call, NBC reported. “It’s nice to have something special happen to you when you deploy. This is definitely one of the funnest days I’ve had since I’ve been in Kandahar.”
The soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment had to wake up at 3:55 a.m. for kickoff, given the 9½-hour time difference.
Broncos fans on the post outnumbered Seahawks fans, so the commander-in-chief’s call was especially welcomed, Sgt. Hogan said.
